House in the Ricefields

There's a walk I take near home when I need reminding that life can be uncomplicated. Rice paddies, a few small cafes, houses tucked into the green. Half a sunny day is all it needs.

This yellow house stopped me on one of those walks. I don't know anything about the people inside, but I found myself imagining them — a comfortable life, enough but not excess, friendly neighbors, perhaps a small kitchen garden around the side. And that exuberant fan palm, fairytale and generous, impossible not to smile at.

It's the kind of place that makes you think: yes. That would do nicely.
