Afternoon On The Veranda

It was a sparkling Saturday afternoon. I was making infused water — cucumber and lemon slices, a glass pitcher filling slowly — and I'd set out a vase of tropical leaves and birds of paradise. A friend was coming.

There's a particular quality to the light in the middle of a Bali afternoon. Saturating is the only word for it — it soaks into everything, the tablecloth, the glasses, the cutting board, and turns the ordinary into something almost ceremonial. I had to paint it before it moved.
