Saturday Zinnias

It was the rainy season, and the grey had settled in — outside and in. Inside weather, you might call it. I went into the garden and cut every zinnia I could find, brought them in, put them in a glass and painted them. There's something about committing to colour when everything feels muted that lifts us. The grey background stayed honest — but the flowers couldn't help but remain perky and bright. By the time the painting was finished, so was the grey.
